Keeping in mind that other students with special abilities also need to read the book along with other regular pupils in the classroom, the NCERT has released a stream of 40 booklets. The council will be studying the impact that these books create to see if the technique used in the booklets could be used for textbooks so every student both normal and special alike can read from the same textbook in the same class.
Each of the forty booklets come in both digital and print versions, the former for the kids with hearing problems, while the booklets dedicated for visually impaired kids have tactical and Braille components. This will help kids with language or speech disorders, learning disabilities, autism, ADHD and cerebral palsy to stay on track with the same reading track as other kids in the class.
Until now, students with certain limitations had different textbooks and also different classrooms. But in order to enhance the quality of education, kids must learn together. Specially able kids have been kept in isolation. NCERT wants to have special books so they can address this problem and create an inclusive classroom!
The project has kicked off on a preliminary basis, and keeps note of all principles of universal design for education in mind. The printed booklets have been launched under the series Barkhaa, which is a supplementary graded series basically developed by NCERT Department of Elementary education.
This new series has got forty story booklets with illustrations and covers five themes. The five themes are basically Animals, birds, toys and games, food, and relationships! It has also got four levels of reading with aims at helping kids in learning from the basic level. This reading series is believed to be a paradigm shift in the very way the learning and teaching material is prepared or conceived. It is also the first of their kind for all early readers. It can be seen as a very important platform for inclusion in classrooms!
NCERT aims at having one book for all kids. They want to eradicate the labeling of the kids, and these books are believed to be the toddler steps at a bigger picture where we would have classrooms where kids share same learning space and same study materials without feeling discriminated. This series is only the beginning! You can get these NCERT books free download online!
